What to expect at your wedding cake consultation
You’ve booked your cake with me (woohoo!) or maybe you’re still deciding if I’m the right cake designer for you. Either way, welcome! Here I’m walking you through what to expect from your wedding cake consultation, so be relaxed, excited, and ready to talk all things cake with me.
Most consultations take place at my home in Drumoak, Aberdeenshire. Obviously it’s my home, so expect comfy setting where we can take our time over a tea or coffee and talk cake! We’ll arrange a date and time that works for you, and I’m more than happy to offer evening or weekend slots to fit around your work and other commitments.
And if you’ve not yet booked me to make your wedding cake?
No problem at all — this post will still give you a really good idea of what to expect if we work together. And to make things even easier, I’ve created a free Wedding Cake Brochure. It’s got all the information you need including flavour options, portion sizes, design ideas, and how to book. Download wedding cake brochure here if you’d like to have it to hand while you’re planning the other details of your big day.
Here’s a little more detail about what to expect when we meet to discuss your cake choices (aka the “wedding cake consultation”)
(and for all other questions you might have prior to booking with me, please visit my wedding cake information page and take a look at the FAQ section)

What do we discuss during the wedding cake consultation?
I like to hear your story of how you met, the proposal and why you chose your venue. I’m such a romantic at heart, I want to know it all! But it’s also super helpful for me as I start to formulate design ideas in my head.
Then we’ll talk specifics – I’ll be keen to hear details like the time of your ceremony, who your wedding photographer is, if you’ve selected your florist yet etc.
Then we get onto the cake details such as confirming total guests (yes, you won’t have RSVPs, but what’s your guest list size?) which will then help us decide how many portions of cake will be required. I advise making enough cake for 80% of guests but it’s totally up to each couple how much they’d like.
We then discuss wedding colours, venue decor, flowers etc and get ideas going for a design that fits your wedding. I’ll share with you lots of images of cake design options. These are just “inspo” pics as your wedding cake is bespoke to you, but this can be a great starting point for discussion.
What do I need to bring or prepare for the cake meeting?
Anything and everything is helpful to me so I can design your perfect wedding cake. I love to see Pinterest boards, colour swatches of bridesmaid dresses, invite mock ups – whatever gives me a feel for your style.
Photos of your venue are super helpful (although it’s possible I’ve worked your Aberdeenshire or Aberdeen based wedding venue before). Floral inspiration and an idea of your guest numbers is also really useful.
Don’t worry about having it all perfectly figured out though — this meeting is all about me getting to know you and your wedding details to help me make a start on the design process.

Will I get to taste different cake flavours at this cake consultation?
I don’t offer taste testing while you’re meeting with me. Instead you’ll receive a complimentary wedding cake taster box which contains 6 flavours (you can choose in advance from the cake flavour menu) along with 2 iced sugar cookie favours. That’s yours to take away and enjoy in the next day or so at leisure.
Some of my couples have told me about making it a full-on cake date: they dress up, set the table with their nicest china, make a pot of tea (or crack open some bubbly), and turn cake tasting into a highlight of their wedding planning. I’ve even had couples send me photos with scorecards or tell me about their flavour debates.
If it were me? I’d grab a picnic blanket, find a pretty spot outdoors (if the Aberdeenshire weather behaves!), and enjoy every bite in amongst wedding chat.
However you do it, just make it fun. Because you’re tasting cake for your wedding. That’s a snap worth taking (and I loved to be tagged in these on Instagram!) and something for the memory book!
How long does a typical wedding cake consultation last?
Generally they last about an hour. This is generally enough time to spend together to ensure I have all the information I need to design the type of cake that suits your wedding venue and your wedding theme or style.
But we’ll take our time and it’ll feel relaxed – enjoy your cup of tea, and feel free to just be giddy for an hour or so talking about your love story and your wedding plans. It’s really the most lovely time of your life and while I know wedding planning can be stressful, working with me won’t be!
What tips can you give so that I can make the most of this cake chat?
Try to come prepared with your ideas and all the details I need to know. But also come with an open mind about cake style too. I’ll share ideas from my “inspiration book” (my portfolio of cakes to date) which can make for a great starting point and might open your eyes to alternative ideas that you hadn’t thought about before.

If you’ve enjoyed this little peek into what a wedding cake consultation looks like and you’re thinking about booking me to make your wedding cake for your special day, I’d love to help you take the next step.
